Above – A Dance Film Premieres on Nowness

The Premiere
I’m excited to announce that Above, a dance film five years in the making, is premiering exclusively on Nowness in partnership with The New York Times Magazine. Directed by Jacob Krupnick, the film captures Brazilian ballet dancer Ingrid Silva performing at sunrise on the rooftop of Renzo Piano’s New York Times Building—a space revealed for the first time.

A Personal Journey
Creating Above was a surreal experience for me. I flew in from Paris to design a paper tutu for Ingrid, inspired by one of my mother’s drawings. Being 800 feet above Manhattan, seeing the sunrise and my sculpture come to life against the iconic skyline, was an unforgettable moment. The little girl in me from a small town in France was in awe.

Behind the Film
The story behind Above is unique. In 2019, The New York Times Magazine invited Jacob Krupnick to film on their rooftop, but plans changed. We were given the opportunity to create a personal project there, under a five-year embargo. Filming at sunrise with a dream team—including cinematographer Soren Nielsen and Ingrid Silva—was pure magic.

A Musical Collaboration
As a musician, collaborating with Nils Frahm on the soundtrack was a dream come true. His music perfectly complements the ethereal feeling of the film, bringing everything together in a profound way.

Finally Sharing It
After five years of waiting, I’m overjoyed to share Above with the world. This project has been a milestone in my career, and I hope it inspires you as much as it did for all of us involved.
