Pli.é Project
Exhibition
Presented in 2018 in Montréal, Pli.é is an immersive exhibition that celebrates the convergence of dance, paper art, and diversity. This exhibition features a stunning series of photographs capturing ballerinas from Paris, Rome, New York, and Montreal, each dressed in hand-folded paper tutus. Through these images, Pli.é addresses the lack of diversity in the ballet world, highlighting the beauty and strength of women on pointe in every skin tone.
The name Pli.é is a fusion of two powerful artistic expressions—dance and paper art. In ballet, plié refers to a movement in which the dancer bends and straightens her knees, embodying flexibility, control, and grace. In French, plié also means "folded," symbolizing the delicate and intricate nature of paper folding.
This exhibition not only showcases the breathtaking photographs but also includes the sculptural paper tutus and sculptures that inspired the series. Together, these works embody the fluidity and strength of both the human form and paper, celebrating the beauty of motion, creativity, and the unfolding of diversity within the art world. Pli.é is a grand celebration of inclusivity, reflecting the power of art to challenge norms and embrace the richness of human identity.
