“Chromatic Reflections”

Yannis Davy Guibinga and Pauline Loctin

Introduction

Creative mediums converge in a unique collaboration that blends the works of two artists whose distinct voices nonetheless share a common language – across composition, color and continents.

Based in Montreal, with origins in France and deep roots in Africa, Gabonese photographer Yannis Davy Guibinga and paper sculptor Pauline Loctin combined their respective mediums to create a probing exploration of color as a form of expression.

This collection establishes a union between texture and composition, light and shadow, subject and viewer, that offers new ways to interpret inner and outer experiences. The worlds created in these works are abstract and yet entirely familiar, for there is a universal quality to any realm that lives – and breathes – in color.

Descriptions

"Chromatic Reflections" is an exhibition intertwining the works of photographer Yannis Davy Guibinga and paper artist Pauline Loctin in an enchanting and engaging conversation placing the art at the centre of the exchange. Within this artistic dialogue that transcends the realms of photography and paper sculpture, a profound connection to ancestral spirits emerges within the works, inviting you to embark on a sensory journey where emotions find tangible form and colors echo the secrets of the past.

Yannis Davy Guibinga, a Montréal-based Gabonese photographer, presents his mesmerizing portfolio that explores the beauty and diversity of the African continent and its diaspora through colors, contrasts and gradients.  Through his lens, he captures surreal moments and untold stories, exploring the multifaceted nature of identity, particularly within the Black diaspora. Guibinga's vibrant photographs reveal the essence of his subjects and invite viewers to witness the narratives that shape their lives.

Complementing Guibinga's captivating imagery, Pauline Loctin unveils her masterful paper sculptures, breathing life into the exhibition space with different kinds of sculptures and installations. With meticulous precision and skill, Loctin transforms ordinary sheets of paper into intricate three-dimensional forms that mesmerize the senses. Her delicate creations defy gravity, suspended between fragility and strength. Every fold and crease in Loctin's sculptures showcases her skilled craftsmanship, evoking notions of grace, transformation, and the interplay of light and darkness. In Loctin's ethereal works, we discover a realm where imagination soars, reflecting upon the transient nature of existence.

Within "Chromatic Reflections" the synergy between Guibinga's photography and Loctin's paper sculptures becomes evident. Vibrant palettes found in Guibinga's photographs echo in Loctin's hues, while the narratives conveyed in his images find resonance in the delicate gestures of her paper forms. The art of each artist intertwines and feeds off the other, resulting in a conversation between the two artists. Their unspoken dialogue creates a unique sensory experience, where whispered tales find expression in the interplay of colors.
